I want to launch my own private Social Networking site, what’s the best / easiest to use platform?

Needs to be easy to set up and cheap as possible. The aim is to help people share stories in a private atmosphere with like minded people!

Also i would like to have a feature where you have to be invited into the community rather than free for everyone to join
Thanks for the answers so far all look great so far! I have also found: www.socialengine.net has anyone used them before??

BuddyPress – It’s based off the Wordpress platform but provides social networking tools.

Well launching a social networking site is not an easy task if you are planning to make it big enough to bring it revenues for you.

As far as choice of platform is concerned, there are various options like aspx, jsp, php and you can use any of them since it would not make a big difference as long as you are comfortable with the language.

The point to consider before launching any social networking website is that you should be very clear about the features and USP that you would be offering to people. Today there are many alternatives available with very smart features. Your should be able to serve the purpose that these websites are not able to serve and make it your selling point.

    All the best!

    Ning.com
It offers you pre-built ones that you can easily edit.
You could also look into creating your own one with PHP or something

Some CMS’ offer social network capabilities, I think Joomla does etc.
