Why the heck is Apple Inc. ignoring India?

April 25, 2010 - 6:23 pm 2 Comments

India has never been an important market for Apple. During the early ’90s when I was fresh in the advertising business, Macs ruled the Creative & Studio Departments of advertising agencies. Even then, the onus of marketing and servicing Macs was on the local re-seller. There wasn’t much of a concerted effort from Apple. Later, PC’s became pretty much the norm for graphics, Office Suites and everything else. Today, it’s common to find seasoned Art Directors being comfortable only on a Windows PC. Yes, there are Macs in Studios and Art Departments but it’s more an exception than the norm – chief culprit being the high price of the Mac.

Then came the iPod which introduced Apple and it’s ecosystem to a whole new generation. And with much friendlier pricing, Macbook’s have an appeal to a potentially large audience. Apple re-sellers have mushroomed in major cities. So in terms of a product portfolio, at the high end they have iMacs, Macbook Pros and iPhone. At the popular pricing level, they have a few iPods and the Macbook. Add to it, a fantastic OS in Snow Leopard and accessories like Magic Mouse, the Apple portfolio is extremely appealing. And there is a retail network of sorts in place. Yet we all know that Apple is virtually a non-player in India – be it in mobile phones, desktops or laptops. The reason is not hard to seek: Apple is simply not interested in India.

It’s a litany of woes for the Apple fan in India:

- iPhone: a right royal pricing mess. It was DOA as far as India was concerned with that kind of pricing

- no signs of iPhone 3Gs: this despite the promise made by Phil Schiller in Jan ‘09 that the iPhone 3Gs will be launched in Aug 09 here. The Apple re-sellers haven’t a clue and they keep giving fresh dates of launch every time you ask them.

- no music on the iTunes India store: it’s moronic, to say the least, that in one of the world’s most music-rich countries, iTunes doesn’t offer music

- every major Apple product released in the US doesn’t find it’s way here: the Magic Mouse being a case in point. It is still available on a ‘pre-order basis’ at the re-sellers.

- Apple India’s Customer Support sucks

Apple may not have huge market share or value ambitions from the Desktop/laptop market in India. They will never be able to compete with local manufacturers, assemblers on price. Plus, category dynamics are so stacked up against Apple. A market ruled by Microsoft, ubiquity of pirated software, ignorance of what Apple’s integrated approach really is, apathy towards Apple – there are enough reasons for Apple’s poor chances of success in India.

With iPhone, I think they have a chance of generating huge volumes and value in India, if – and it’s a big if – Apple chooses to do so. India is far ahead of the US in many ways when it comes to the telecom market – we are a lot more demanding from our handset and service provider -the dynamics of the category are different here. Despite iPhone’s flaws – perceived or otherwise, I feel it was the best bet Apple had to broad-base their appeal. One of the big reasons for it’s success in the West – the App Store would have been a great advantage here. Even abroad, that advantage can dwindle any time. If Apple has 100,000 apps today, it’s a matter of time before the Android, Blackberry and Ovi stores populate their stores with large numbers. The fortress Apple built around the iPhone is not impregnable.

Taking a cue from Apple’s App Store all the big boys have launched India-specific app stores. Nokia, Aircel (Pocketapps), Airtel (App Central), Blackerry – they all have their app stores. It’s a matter of time before India/city-specific apps come into the picture, with an ability to pay through local currency… maybe even through iTunes-like accounts. When that happens, any potential advantage the iPhone had would disappear.

With a mobile population of 500mn and counting, India is a mouth watering prospect for telecom marketers. And the potential of VAS and ARPU is yet to be realized fully. But the bigger opportunity lies elsewhere. It is well documented that the classic pyramidal structure of Indian consumer markets will change to accommodate the bulging middle class (the Aspirers) in the near future.

The estimated size of the Aspirer’s market is 124mn households. Agreed, not all of them may be potential customers for the iPhone. But with the right kind of pricing, a chunk of the Aspirers could be. This group, while being price sensitive is characterized by seeing premium experiences at popular prices. For them, the likeliest port of call when it comes to smartphones is unlikely to be an iPhone, given the marketing (or the lack of it) here in India.

It is unlikely that Apple isn’t aware of the attraction of India, as a market. But they deliberately seem to be ignoring it. If and when they plan to make a fist of it here (with the iPhone perhaps, given the mobile population here), it may be too late. The competition seems to ha

Apple Inc. is not ignoring India, even India is only country in south Asia which has official Apple support, you can check out Apple’s website and in the region section you will see "India" like another countries, obviously Apple is new to India so it’s still developing it’s service quality for India, but if you are talking about Apple store then I think soon Apple will make one if peoples of India buy apple’s product widely.

It’s all about the profit ;)

apple has lots of legal complications which has prevented them from getting permission from some countries to sell certain things. in the meantime, just use a foreign itunes gift card to open a foreign account and you can access lots of music, movies, etc.

Which super-smartphone to buy (iPhone 3GS not available)?

February 13, 2010 - 8:46 am 2 Comments

Hello everyone. I have decided to buy myself a super-smartphone. The problem is, I live in India.

The iPhone 3GS is not available (legally) in India. It is not even launched here.

What I need, in order of priority: Web browsing on the move, solid build quality, reliable OS, Facebook, Exchange email, a few games.

Now considering the 3GS is not available in India, here are my options. Please suggest the next best one.

1. iPhone 3G: This is an outdated phone, and available only with Airtel. It is NOT a subsidized price like in other countries. The 8GB is close to Rs.30000 (USD $650). Airtel does not have 3G network, so I will be stuck with EDGE browsing. I may be wrong, but I think the 8GB iPhone 3G is too expensive at $650, especially as it will be locked to Airtel. Also, there is virtually no Apple support here, so I am not sure what will happen if the battery dies out.

2. iPhone 3GS from US, unlocked and jailbroken. That will set me off by around $550 to $600, but I will have the best phone in the world. On the flip side, it will be illegal, and if the battery dies out, it will just become a brick. Somehow I am not excited about paying such a huge amount to do something illegal. But I guess it is an option, in a sense.

3. HTC Hero: Costs Rs.30000 ($650) with no carrier lock. I read a lot of reviews and watched YouTube videos about this one. While almost everything I hear about it is positive, people do report that it is sluggish at times. I am tempted to buy this, but not sure how reliable the HTC hardware is. HTC too has hardly any support in India, so I need reliable hardware and good build quality.

I am tempted to just go for the Hero, but thinking, is the iPhone 3G still better than the Hero? I know it has only 128MB RAM vs the Hero’s 288 MB, but I guess there are a lot of factors other than that.

Please provide your suggestions.

Note:
1. Motorola Droid, Palm Pre, Droid Eris are not available in India.
2. The myTouch is available, but it costs almost as much as the Hero, it is locked to Airtel and they are selling it without the Market app. I am not interested in rooting my phone etc.
3. I am not interested in Windows Mobile, as I already have a Herald and the experience with it has been infuriating.
4. I know 2010 will see many new phones, but they will take a year or years to reach India. So I figure it makes sense to buy the best phone available now, and then upgrade later maybe after 2 or 3 years.
Hi Rahul! I would like to add two updates from my end:

1) Univercell is offering Samsung Galaxy at Rs.15000 which is a steal. If you google, people compare this with Magic (myTouch) and it gets good reviews too. But Univercell says they are out of stock. One option is to call Univercell everyday and closely track, get friendly with a Univercell employee and buy it.

2) The second option (99% I will go for this) is iPhone 3G from Airtel. They are offering 500mb free per month for 1 yr.

I would suggest dont go for Tatoo. Resistive screen is not a good experience. Besides, after comparing a lot it seems that nothing in Android comes close to the user experience iPhone offers.

Last factor is iPhone’s resale value in India. Next year I can still sell the iPhone 3G for 60-70% of the price I pay now, and get the latest one if I want.

So right now I am thinking iPhone 3G thru Airtel may be a good option. Only thing is to kill closed apps using task killer and it shd be as fast as the 3GS.
I forgot to add: Today my HTC Herald’s speaker died. I mean people can hear my voice but I cannot hear them.

HTC’s support here is very much comparable to Apple’s support i.e zilch. Last month the touchscreen broke, and I’ve been running around in circles trying to get support but the problem is that the employees in official "support centers" are really multi-brand service centres, and they are not really familiar with HTC. They are more familiar with Nokia and SE. As a result I have been using the Herald without its touchscreen (it has a keyboard).

This is also making me think. Another colleague of mine bought HTC Touch, and his mic had to be replaced (he ‘drop it or anything).

While I LOVE Android, this is making me re-think about Hero. Also, tomorrow if I decide to change my mind, I will get next to nothing when I try to sell my Hero next yr.

I am just thinking aloud here Let me know your suggestions!

I would wait for the iPhone 3GS to come out in India if I was in your scenario but if I really need it then I would buy and iPhone 3G.

Ideas for celebrating a 10th Anniversary?

September 10, 2009 - 4:30 pm 2 Comments

Our Vision:

To be the most professional consultancy firm in East Africa providing comprehensive public relations services to clients in an ethical manner with our people as our most important asset.

Background:
GDCC was founded in 1997, by Gina who set out on her own after working at Barclays Kenya for over 13 years as Head of Corporate Affairs, to launch her PR firm Gina Din Corporate Communications. The impeccable work she did for Barclays earned her their trust and it follows that they became her first client. This was a major boost for her firm, which at the time had only three staff members and a guard dog.

Gina Din Corporate Communications, GDCC, is synonymous with professionalism and quality. GDCC offices, located in the serene state house locality, reverberate with peace and tranquility necessary for productivity.

GDCC’s client base has been on a steady increase over the years. Today the company boasts of a client list of over 15 Companies in Kenya on a retainer basis. Besides there are a number of companies served on an ad hoc basis.

GDCC’s core business is providing a holistic PR package to her clients. These range from event management, corporate PR, brand PR, product launches, crisis communication, media monitoring, documentary production and design. GDCC’s well- trained and professional staff also work with international NGO’s, donors and multilateral Agencies in designing local and international communication packages.

GDCC has an international affiliation with ARCAY Africa, a pan african PR Network and is in the process of opening up an office in Dar-es-Salaam in early 2007 and later on in the year in Kampala.

The Task:

GDCC has now been in the market place for ten years and has acheived much in terms of client base, staff, resources and expertise. Present your proposal to communicate this milestone for GDCD, with a concept of outlined activities such as event ideas and media plans, timelines and pre-launch, actual launch and post launch ideas.

Some of the messages that need to feature strongly are

GDCC has been around for ten years
GDCC can be trusted
GDCC has the local expertise and on the ground logistical support
GDCC offers more than just media exposure
etc, etc. Please come up with more
Suggest various activities for the different target audiences. I would suggest that you think out of the box.

A tenth anniversary logo would be good as a starter. This can be used on all our stationery

Throw a party…yes, i know that sounds very cliche but it’s what will happen at the party/celebration that will make it one to be noted.
Picture this: grown people from every field OF BUSINESS PLAYING GAMES…games to demonstratee trust(i.e physical dependance & team building), games to challenge the mind(think mini-who’s smarter now/family feud), games to inform more about GDCC (Q & As) etc. you get the idea don’t you…?afterall, a decade needs to be celebrated with a splash!something fresh…generate more ideas around keeping it exciting!

this would be a daytime event ofcourse…

then in the evening, there could be a cocktail at a venue of your choice with all your esteemed guests and clients to attend. Here, GDCC can take the opportyunity to give a vote of thanks to all who deserve it. The staff may receive awards as per their achievements, there can even be a special honorary trophy for Gina Din on account of this fantastic achievement(think grammys) it’s here that GDCC could tell everyone what they have accomplished and even more what they intend to accomplish in the next 10yrs to come!

well…that’s all for now but should you need more help brainstorming, feel free to contact me on angelic4g@yahoo.com, I’ll be more than glad to help.

As for the logo, great idea…i could come up with a few designs and present them to you so you can choose your best(i’m pretty good at it), that would happen soley on request.

There could also be GDCC banners for the events, bumper stickers, tshirts, trinkets like keychains etc….fun stuff.
Corporate meets fun kind of stuff!

The big clients should get special 10th anniversary gifts, with logo & all, maybe mugs or maybe even framed certificates of appreciation with sincerest regards from GDCC…that kind of thing.

ALL THE BEST…

& CONGRATULATIONS GDCC!!! :-)

I’m looking for the right MLM/Network Marketing Company to join. I know it’s out there somewhere. Sign me up!

I am a veteran of Amway, Primerica, Mary Kay, GT Trends and others. I truly believe in the system. I am looking for my next mlm opportunity with the right product/service, the right company and the right upline. I’ve been to most of the mlm directories and seen all of the stale markets that I can stand. I’m looking for fresh and unique. Startups and Pre-launches are a bonus, but I’ll take established and growing too. I must believe in the product/service. It has to provide a real value for prospective buyers in need, i.e. marketability. Concerning comp plans, I love the 1/3 2/3 binary, but will consider others. Weekly paychecks are better than monthly. An active upline is critical, as is, responsive customer service, state of the art backroom, high-quality landing pages and local meetups. If you know of an awesome mlm opportunity that fits this description, please let me know about it. I’m looking for something people want and need… to save money and make money. Please provide link!

Brandon, looks like you are a pretty active networker. But just curious, what didn’t you like about the other companies you were involved in? They are all great companies. I’d love to know more about you as a person.

I’m an active internet network marketer and MLM coach and I truly have an interest in helping people achieve their goals.

Shoot me an email, let’s talk!
